LBP CPD: skills maintenance for licensed building practitioners

In New Zealand, licensed building practitioners complete skills maintenance every two years. It combines compulsory reading with quizzes, elective activities each practitioner chooses, and on-the-job learning.

If you're a licensed building practitioner

Your requirements, the compulsory articles and the place to record your activities are all on the Licensed Building Practitioner scheme's website.

Who can deliver training that counts

The elective part is open. Courses aren't accredited under the Licensed Building Practitioners scheme. Practitioners choose activities that are useful to their work and relevant to their licence class, and they use their own judgement about what to record. That means a supplier, a merchant, an association or an employer can provide learning a practitioner chooses to count.

Where Howio fits

Howio is independent of the Licensed Building Practitioners scheme and of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, which runs it.

  • If you supply, sell or represent building products

Turn your product and technical training into short courses builders complete on a phone, and issue a certificate on completion that a practitioner can keep with their record.

  • If you run a building or construction company

Use the same software to induct your crews and subcontractors and to show how each job is done on your sites.

Questions about LBP CPD

How often do licensed building practitioners complete skills maintenance?
Every two years.
How many elective hours does a licensed building practitioner need?
12, 15 or 18 hours over the two years, depending on the licence class. A practitioner with more than one licence completes the higher number.
Can a third party deliver CPD for licensed building practitioners in New Zealand?
Yes, for the elective part. Courses aren't accredited under the scheme, so practitioners choose activities that are useful to their work and relevant to their licence class.
Does the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment approve Howio courses?
No. The Ministry doesn't accredit courses under the scheme, and Howio is independent of it.
Can training on Howio count as an elective activity?
It can if it's relevant to the practitioner's licence class. Each practitioner decides what to include and keeps their own record.
