How expiry works
How approved documents and certificates get an expiry date, and the settings each step has.

When a learner's document is approved, it gets an expiry date. Certificates how.io issues already have one.
Each step that produces something that expires has its own settings, under When it expires:
- when it shows as Expiring (14 days before, unless you change it)
- reminders before it expires (14 days and 1 day before)
- reminders after it expires (every 7 days, up to 4 times)
- who gets each reminder: the learner, the review group, course managers, or a mix
- what happens on the day
The learner is never moved back through the course. Reminder emails link straight to the step.
Dates show as, for example, 3 Nov 2026, in your organisation's time zone.
